Ever heard the expression “Meetings for Meetings?” I think we’re all in agreement that’s not a good habit to get into. But how about this one – “Buzzwords for Buzzwords?”
Ever told someone you feel like a firefighter? Not a literal hook and ladder with the Dalmatian kind of fireman. But due to the amount of fires you put out on a daily basis with clients, employees, family members, etc., a firefighter nonetheless. You know the kinds of days I’m talking about. The ones where you look back on the way home and realize your entire day was spent moving from one crisis to another.
I often feel like a firefighter, but today, I have a new title. I am a translator. Funny to me because I was always horrible with foreign languages growing up. From the time I was a kid, I wanted to learn as many languages as I could, since I really enjoy learning about other cultures. But after countless German and Spanish classes, I still cannot even be considered as a casual speaker of these languages. The one language I have learned to speak is techno babble buzzwordia.
I learned this language by default and trial by fire. In our day-to-day business, our clients present questions based on items they hear or read regarding digital marketing from a blog, social post, article or even a sales person with the latest marketing startup. I try my best to translate the techno babble buzzwordia into a simple explanation of the intent, how it works and why it works. Often the why proves very elusive.
Recently though, I have run across buzzwords for buzzwords. I’m pretty sure people are just making things up now. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes you need to make up a good word to get the point across. But we in digital marketing are taking it to a whole new level.
